Since Henning Mankell wrote his first play Nöjesparken (The Amusement Park) in the beginning of the seventies he has written approximately 30 plays that have been produced in theatres in Sweden as well as abroad.

Mankell’s ambition to unmask the lack of equality in society has always been the same irrespective of artistic expression or context, and also repeats itself in his plays. During his professional life he has divided his time between writing novels and directing at various theatres.

In 1984, Henning Mankell became the director of theatre Kronobergsteatern in Växjö, which lead to the fact that he did not publish a single novel between the years 1984 and 1990. In 1986, Henning took up a position as artistic director of Teatro Avenida in Maputo, Mozambique.
